Airbnb Sees $1 Billion Opportunity in Sponsored Listings

Chesky says paid search placement could add high-margin revenue, but Airbnb has not disclosed a pricing model or launch date.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky sees sponsored listings as a potential $1 billion revenue opportunity. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 8th, he called paid placement an “obvious” service Airbnb could sell to hosts and “a pretty easy straight shot to $1 billion incremental high-margin revenue,” based on other marketplaces. He didn’t announce any official product or timetable.

For hosts, this would create a way to pay for visibility in Airbnb search. Chesky described ads as one part of a broader menu of services the company could sell to hosts.

Putting $1 Billion in Context

Airbnb reported $12.2 billion in revenue for 2025 and ended the year with more than 9 million active listings. A $1 billion annual run rate would equal about 8% of that revenue and nearly match the company’s entire $1.1 billion revenue increase last year.

Using 9 million listings as a rounded figure, $1 billion works out to roughly $110 per listing per year if every listing paid. If just 1 in 10 listings paid to advertise, the average would be about $1,100 per paying listing.

What This Means For Hosts

Sponsored listings would buy more prominent placement, but Airbnb hasn’t disclosed its charging model, where paid results would appear, or which listings could advertise. Vrbo’s Sponsored Listings, which launched globally in September, provides a concrete comparison: Hosts bid at least $5 per booked night and pay when an ad click leads to a booking.

Airbnb’s already tested another financial lever for search placement, where hosts could offer a 10%, 15%, or 20% discount to highly rated guests in exchange for a visibility boost. That host-funded promotion is different from an ad product, but it shows host's willingness to pay for increased visibility.

What Hosts Should Watch

The addition of an ad program on Airbnb would introduce a separate marketing expense on top of the new 15.5% single service fee for hosts. Paid slots would also reduce the space available for organic results.

There’s nothing for hosts to buy or budget for yet. If Airbnb launches sponsored listings, the pricing model and number of paid slots will determine whether this helps fill open nights or if it just raises the cost of maintaining visibility.
