Vrbo’s Largest-Ever Product Launch Adds Paid Search Placement

Sponsored Listings lead a wider launch that also includes new rates, cancellation policies, and guest tools.

Expedia Group announced its largest-ever vacation rental product launch on September 1st, covering 12 products and functions across Vrbo and Escapia. The biggest change for Vrbo hosts is already live globally: Sponsored Listings now let operators pay for premium positions at the top of the search results.

Sponsored Listings give hosts another way to increase visibility, but it also creates a paid tier that places listings above properties that were organically ranking high.

How Vrbo Sponsored Listings Work

Hosts choose a bid per booked night, set targeting and bid modifiers, then enter an auction. Vrbo combines the bid with an undisclosed “ad score.” If the campaign wins, the property may appear near the top when a traveler’s search filters match the listing.

The minimum bid is $5 per booked night, with no maximum. Competing bids are hidden, and hosts can pause campaigns at any time. Expedia’s advertising portal reports impressions, clicks, bookings, spending, and return on ad spend.

When we covered Vrbo’s pilot in June, the product was described as cost per click. The launched version is less risky: a host does not pay when someone merely views or clicks the ad. Vrbo’s only charging when an ad click leads to a booking.

There is one qualification. Expedia’s Sponsored Listings terms say the acquisition charge remains due whether or not the booking results in a completed stay, meaning that you could still be charged if a guest books and then later cancels.

Vrbo says pilot participants averaged 49% more bookings, 39% higher revenue, and 30% more booked nights. Those are Expedia Group internal figures. The company did not disclose the sample size, comparison period, or testing methodology.

More Ways to Trade Price for Flexibility

Vrbo is also adding non-refundable rates for eligible properties. Hosts will be able to show a refundable option beside a lower-priced non-refundable rate, giving guests different prices based on how much flexibility they want.

Two new cancellation policies are also live. Hosts can offer a full refund until five days or one day before check-in. Together, the changes let operators choose how much discount to exchange for a firmer reservation and how much late-cancellation exposure to accept.

Eligible properties can now accept same-day bookings before noon. Vrbo’s new Welcome Guide stores stay details, automatically sends access instructions, and confirms delivery. Limited Time Offers tied to Vrbo sales events are coming later.

Where Vrbo Search Goes From Here

Sponsored Listings don’t replace organic ranking, but paid properties can now occupy the premium positions above it. The pay-per-booked-night structure is more accountable than charging for every click.

Vrbo’s Built to Stay survey found that promotions influence 91% of travelers, but only 35% said a promotion led them to a property they otherwise would not have booked.

As more hosts test Sponsored Listings, the results should clarify whether paid placement creates meaningful new demand and how it changes the cost of maintaining visibility.
