Airbnb Tightens New Year’s Eve Anti-Party Screening

Last year’s system blocked more than 23,000 high-risk bookings across major markets

Airbnb will activate its annual anti-party restrictions for New Year’s Eve, expanding the use of machine-learning screening tools across the US, Canada, the UK, France, Spain, Australia, and Puerto Rico. The system evaluates booking patterns and other behavioral signals to identify reservations that could pose a higher risk for parties. If a booking looks risky, Airbnb will block the guest from renting an entire home or redirect the guest to book a private room or hotel instead.

Airbnb said last year’s New Year’s Eve rollout stopped more than 20,000 attempted bookings in the U.S. and more than 3,000 in Canada. Airbnb says these holiday rules, along with its global party ban introduced five years ago, have helped cut party-related complaints by more than 50% worldwide.

Alongside the renewed controls, Airbnb issued reminders about existing rules that prohibit third-party bookings and unaccompanied stays by minors. The company said violating these policies can lead to canceled bookings, removal from the platform, and being held responsible for any damages. Airbnb added that it routinely cooperates with law-enforcement investigations tied to unauthorized parties.

The platform is also keeping in place several year-round measures designed to minimize disruptions in residential neighborhoods. These include reservation-screening tools aimed at identifying high-risk stays, a Neighborhood Support Line for reporting issues like a party in progress, and a 24-hour Safety Line for hosts and guests. U.S. hosts can also get a free Minut noise sensor, which alerts them to unusually high sound levels without recording audio.

Airbnb said the New Year’s Eve restrictions are part of a broader effort to reduce nuisance activity and maintain host, guest, and community safety during a time when parties are more common.
